Amirthalingam's work

Basically i am an art lover.Our nation is rich as far as any forms of arts are concerned.
The arts i means here is Fine arts it consist of both visual arts and performing arts.

The December-chennai is not just cool it is more chill for music lovers,That will make all music lovers cheer-up.December music seasons is very special, that too one happen to be in chennai..The music lovers from the globe visits here for this festival...not just lovers but the performers too fly from far distances like US,Canada,europe etc.to chennai.Tamilnadu.

I see many people of indian orgin from USA visit here to perform.That shows they need to be intact with our own culture..though i saw many performers seems still a learner but curious to perform on stage.This happenings- becuase,we lost the touch of our Gurukulam Environment.I have heared few vocals & instrumental musics its good but not enough.

As a layman i could found many flaws , but loved one thing these young muscian's are making our culture allive and can potentially carry the same to the forth coming generation as well.So we must applause to all of them.

Today i visited Cholamandalam Arts Village in injambakkam,which is close to Mamallapuram.As a friend of mine, who is artist by profession.
His name is- Mr.Amirthalingam.
he has done both his BFA& MFA from college of arts chennai.He is a man of silence but his art speaks louder .Know him past several years i have seen him doing live portrait.Really good at line drawing.Since after long time i met him today. he is grown up,so don't want to put him in a shell...he just enjoy his creativity and seems live in spontaneity. He also mentioned he worked few tamil films as art director.What i personnaly like in him is his simplicity and down to earth approach.Wish him to set some mile stone in 'contemporary art'.

This group show done by 3-other budding artist with Amir.So, it is named as 'CHATUR'( sanscrith-chatur means-4)

As a art critic i must submit my observation in a professional terms here.
Amirthanlingam's (Artist,chennai)-
Work can be divided into two categories:The more spontaneous ink drawings from his village,and the painted compositions bordering on dream-reality.Political concerns,effacing rural beliefs and rustic eldorado,find place on his canvas.In his paintings he uses a hybrid style,mixing real images such as skulls and crows,with dream colours such as pink placid sky and illuminated peacock,thus lending surrealism to his paintings.His 'ink-works' in black radiate energy and express a joy of village life.

Amirthalingam was taught by Mr.Chandru, Ex-principle of college of arts.While i am in deep conversation with him, he has immense gratitude for Mr.Chandru and the Late-World renowend artist Mr.Santhanakrishnan.
I too have seen Late- Santhankrishnan work , i am no way eligible to speak/comment are say anything about his work...he is the reall master in arts i have seen..That too the line drawings the depth he shows in all his art form is simply mind blowing.He lived for arts.The chennai college of fine arts has produced many wonderfull artist to our indian art community.

i must mention few facts about this art village.

The Cholamandam Artists Village, situated about 9 kms from Chennai city is a haven for art lovers and artisans alike. Way back in 1964, the principal and students of the Madras School of Arts and Crafts set up this institution that has come to be recognized as a significant school of art and crafts.At that time, there were no institution or outlet for those seeking to pursue a career in arts. The Late K.C.S Paniker was one of the pioneering spirits behind the Cholamandalam Arts Village in Chennai. Artists live as a community and pooled together their skills and resources.The Cholamandalam Arts Village has a permanent art gallery to hold exhibitions. Sculptures made of granite; wood, copper and bronze are created within the Artists Village. The open-air theater is a platform for performing artists or even poetry reading sessions and dance recitals.Indian arts such as batik and pottery and painting are seen in the myriad articles and works done by the artists of the Cholamandalam village. You can view or purchase interesting pieces in terracotta and batik. In fact Cholamandalam has grown to be an important hub or meeting place for international artistes in sylvan surroundings. ( one must see the lanscape...very amazing it is.)

Above all i enjoyed my day with artist also met a artist who is currently in Singapore.Close to this gallery beach is there.I went and enjoyed my play in beach.

A giant leap for Giacometti
The record £65 million(In US$104millions) paid for a work by the Swiss sculptor Giacometti has catapulted him into the mega-league of collectable artists, says Alastair Sooke.

When Alberto Giacometti’s sculpture L’Homme qui marche I (Walking Man I) became the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction this week, I couldn’t help thinking of Orson Welles’s famous speech in Carol Reed’s film The Third Man. “In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance,” says Welles, playing the villain Harry Lime. “In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.”

Clearly, Welles’s character had forgotten about Giacometti, who was born in an inaccessible valley in the Swiss Alps in 1901. When L’Homme qui marche I, estimated at £12 million to £18 million, went under the hammer for more than £65 million at Sotheby’s in London on Wednesday evening, the Swiss sculptor, who spent most of his life working in a filthy, troglodytic studio in Paris, trumped every artist who had ever lived.

Giacometti had even seen off Picasso, whose Rose Period painting Garcon à la Pipe (Boy with a Pipe) previously held the record for the most expensive painting.

But the sale prompts many questions, not least: is Giacometti the most important artist of the modern era? Is he really better than Picasso?

Comparisons between different artists are vexed and horribly subjective. And, anyway, it’s important to remember that it would be misguided to conflate monetary value with aesthetic worth. Just because Walking Man I went for so much doesn’t mean that, ipso facto, it is the pre-eminent work of the 20th century.

Then, there is the question of the sculpture’s rarity. Incredibly, L’Homme qui marche I, which was executed in 1960, four years after Giacometti was invited to design a group of sculpted figures for the plaza outside the headquarters of the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, exists in a numbered edition of six bronzes, some of which can be seen in public collections around the world.

In other words, the plutocrat who took such an expensive shine to Giacometti’s work wasn’t even acquiring something unique: the sculpture is numbered two out of six, and was cast in 1961. When billionaires splash out on masterpieces such as Picasso’s sumptuous 1932 painting Le Rêve (The Dream), which was bought by the Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn (who later stuck his elbow accidentally through the canvas), they do so in the knowledge that the artist didn’t make two (or more) of them.

There is no question that Giacometti is one of the greatest artists of the past century – but he is rarely considered in the absolute first rank. Born into a well-to-do family (his father was a proficient painter), Giacometti arrived in Paris in 1922. Within five years, he had taken up residence in the shabby studio on the fringes of Montparnasse where he would live and work until his death in 1966.

He first made his name as a Surrealist, championed by the movement’s founder, André Breton. His famous, and ferocious, sculpture of 1932, Woman with her Throat Cut (now in the collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art), is a high-water mark of this period.

Presenting the splayed form of a monstrous and dismembered figure (half woman, half insect), it rests directly on the floor, like a battered corpse discarded by a serial killer. The woman’s ribcage is ripped open; her delicate windpipe has been slashed; her small-breasted body writhes in a contorted pose associated with both physical agony and erotic rapture. A brutally compressed symbol of the aggression latent within sexual desire, the sculpture still shocks today.

Like many people, I consider it one of Giacometti’s out-and-out masterpieces – but, given the work’s violent nature, I imagine that, if it ever came to auction, it would be unlikely to command as high a price as Walking Man I. I don’t suppose that too many billionaires’ trophy wives would enjoy contemplating the sculpture over a bowl of pasta.

Towards the end of the Thirties, though, Giacometti became disillusioned with Surrealism and returned to concentrate once more on the human figure. During the Second World War, he left occupied Paris and stayed in Switzerland, where his sculptures became progressively smaller – so much so, that when he returned to France in 1945, he was able to fit all of his work from the previous four years inside six matchboxes.

Yet these tiny sculptures sparked a crucial new phase in his career. Starting in the late Forties, the artist began to sculpt the series of spindly figures, for which he is probably best known today. Typically, these anorexic men and women, cast in bronze, have a craggy, roughly modelled surface, recording every jabbing thumbprint made by Giacometti in the original plaster or clay. Their distinctive visual appearance quickly became the hallmark of the artist’s style, an instantly recognisable brand that would later prove extremely attractive to collectors – as we saw this week, when 10 bidders before the sale were prepared to pay at least $20 million to buy Walking Man I.

Giacometti was famously indecisive: while working on a sculpture, he would frequently hurl the clay from its armature in disgust and begin again. The unresolved quality of his sculptures lends his stick people a nervous, restless energy.

Many art historians have seen them as icons of Cold War anxiety and modern angst: etiolated, like the victims of Auschwitz; modern counterparts of Pompeians preserved in the ashes of Vesuvius, as though subjected to the fallout of the biggest man-made terror of the 20th century – nuclear holocaust. No wonder that the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre hailed Giacometti’s isolated figures as symbols of existential despair.

All this makes a sculpture by Giacometti seem like a surprisingly bleak choice for a collector. You might expect a billionaire to spend millions on a gloriously colourful painting by Matisse or Klimt to enliven a dining room. But £65 million for a statue that embodies existential dread? It doesn’t sound the most attractive proposition.

Yet, unlike many of Giacometti’s later figures, which stand stock-still, L’Homme qui marche I strides stoically ahead, despite his clumpy feet, which squelch into the sculpture’s base as though sinking into mud. His active pose suggests a kind of grim optimism for humanity: he is the incarnation of the 20th-century everyman, struggling on in a blasted, godless universe. Perhaps this is part of his appeal.

Walking Man I may not be the quintessential work of Giacometti’s career (there are others that are just as good). It certainly isn’t the definitive work of the 20th century – what about Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon?

But that’s the funny thing about the relationship between money and art: now that such an extraordinary price has been paid for Giacometti’s sculpture, it may go down in history as the most haunting image of the 20th century.

Would you pay $104 million for the sculpture?

The life-size bronze sculpture of a man was made in 1961 and was originally cast in an edition of six by the Swiss artist.

It was a record-breaking night for the auction house, as another piece of art was sold for $43 million, making it the most ever paid for a landscape artwork.

The painting by Gustav Klimt entitled "Kirche in Cassone" was purchased by another mystery buyer.

It was the first time in decades that the Klimt painting became available to the public for auction.

"This is a painting that was never on the market and hidden away a long time ago," Clore said.

"It was stolen by the Nazis, finally returned to its rightful owners, and now we are lucky to have it come to the market. There was a real hunger and thirst for something like this."

The night's auction had 39 works, and the total sale price was a staggering $235 million, making it the highest value sale ever staged in London.

There are late-bloomers and then there's Carmen Herrera. At the ripe old age of 94, the abstract painter has finally hit her stride — and she's enjoying every second of it.
"I never in my life had any idea of money and I thought fame was a very vulgar thing. So I just worked and waited," she told The New York Times. "And at the end of my life, I'm getting a lot of recognition, to my amazement and my pleasure, actually."

The Cuban-born painter sold her first painting at age 89, and the accolades have been rolling in ever since: her work has entered the permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern. Last summer The Observer of London called Ms. Herrera the discovery of the decade, asking, "How can we have missed these beautiful compositions?"

According to the Times, Herrera is, "a minimalist whose canvases are geometric distillations of form and color." She has painted in relative isolation since the 1930s, supported largely by her husband, Jesse Loewenthal, a high school English teacher who died in 2000 — four years before she sold her first painting. "Everybody says Jesse must have orchestrated this from above. Herrera said, shaking her head. "Yeah, right, Jesse on a cloud." She added: "I worked really hard. Maybe it was me."

Recently, she accepted an art foundation's lifetime achievement award from the director of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Her good friend, fellow painter Tony Bechara, toasted her and said, "We have a saying in Puerto Rico. The bus — la guagua — always comes for those who wait."

Herrera laughed heartily and issued the perfect response: "Well, Tony, I've been at the bus stop for 94 years!"

Henna also known as Mehandi has been used to decorate young women’s bodies as part of marriage celebrations from ancient time say, it is about 5000 years old tradition. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews etc. in their marriage ceremonies decorate the bride with Henna.
It is used in sacred and ritualistic ceremonies not just in India but also gained popularity in other parts of the world as a beautiful art. The night of Henna is celebrated by most groups in Middle East countries and Asia-pacific region where henna is grown naturally with hot and dry weather conditions.

Mehandi art or henna is a temporarily done on the body with naturally prepared paste. Henna paste is used on different occasion of religious festivals, wedding ceremonies etc. It can be used as natural medium instead of real tattoo designs. AESTHETIC PUNCTUATIONS OF AJANTA FRESCO

From the stand point of History of Indian art Ajanta caves ventilate the most powerful combine of paintings, archiceture, sculptures, which were created from 100 B.C. to A.D.600. Art Historian Sheilal Weiner wrote “The Ajanta caves were once a Buddhist monastic centre. Sculpted in imitation of structural prototypes, the doors, windows,columns and walls of the rock-cut kass were adorned with carved and painting figures….The site is a key to an understanding of the development of Buddhist Art. The oldest caves were excavated during the earliest phases …and the most recent carvings were sculpted just before the incrusion of Hindu elements. The caves contains old form front at early Hinayana site, traditional form occurring only at Ajanta and Mahayana forms that appears for the first time in the monistic halls and areas of worship. “Thus we see Ajanta caves became the canvas for recording the development of Buddhism from the moral and Philosophical perspective to the icon studded Mahayana Buddhism. These caves are embodiment of Gupta era’s golden age which took Indian aesthetics to a new height.

In seventh century A.D. Hieuen Tsang wrote about this caves which will be our entry point to the subject. “In the east of this country(Mohalach’a= Maharashtra) was a mountain range, ridges are above another in succession, tries of peaks and sheer summits.Here was a monastery the base of which was in dark defile and its lofty halls and deep chambers were quarried in the cliff and rested on those track and faced the ravine. The monestry had been built by A-Che-lo of West India. Within the establishment was a large temple above 100 ft height in which was a stone image of the Buddha above seventy feet high.The image was surmounted by a tier of seven canopies unattached and unsupported, each canopy, separated from one above… the walls of this temple had depicted on them the, incidents of Bhuddha’s bodi and small omens attending all great and swmall were here delinated…’. This is one of the earliest descriptions of Ajanta cave .However this world heritage was accidently re-discovered by Madras Army in 1819 and initial works were carried out by archeologist James Burgess and Major William Gill, who exhibited their work in 1866. Since then much has been written on Ajanta and volumes of reports and monographs have surfaced over the century. Thus today we would only touch upon the aesthetic punctuations of Ajanta Fresco to refresh some of our lost memory.

Whether Ajanta paintings are really fresco? The explanations are found in the words of Benjamin Rowland who wrote about the fresco elements and making of surface for Ajanta cave paintings.In the book AJANTA CAVES he recorded “fresco in its true sense implies the application of colors to a layer of moist lime plaster, Indian and all other Asian murals were painted on a dry wall. At Ajanta the rough surface of the rock wall was covered with a layer of earth or cow dung mixed with chopped straw of animal hair as a binding medium to a thickness of an inch or an inch and a half. When this surface has been completely smoothed off, it was covered with a thin layer of finely sieved gypsum or lime plaster, and it was upon this surface that actual painting was done”

In one of the celebrated analysis of Ajanta Paintings Nalini Bhagwat wrote “It is very significant that the available space at the disposal of Ajanta painter is not restricted like that of Sanchi, Bharut or Amravati sculptures, but is comperatively extensive. The complete wall is at the disposal of the Ajanta artist. There is no limit of frame work except the break up of the area by the doom looms often the wall is fully covered with the composition and sometime when the whole wall is covered, the painting continues at right angle on adjoining wall too” . Thus we see the canvas for Ajanta painters were wide open and the continuance remained the key word of inter-connectivity from theme to theme and then to the culture temperatures. On this given wide unrestricted wall ‘canvas’ painter worked out variety of arrangements mainly horizontal band and differentiation came to the fore with weavy lines. The movement of themes ran from left to right and otherwise as well. Sheilal Weiner observed that “… the paintings, on the otherhand, appear overwheliming, it is due to their close proximity. The slender and elongated figures and the painted Jatakas scenes present no more of a contrast to the colossal and weighty qualities of the principal sculpted deities that do the minor carved deities to the principle shrine images.”

The No.10 Ajanta cave is said to be oldest and dates back to first century A.D. In this one can see the depiction of Jataka stories which are indication of previous births of Buddha before attaining Nirvana. The paintings are so arranged in the form of a long freize and theme to theme are linked with frame to frame. However, in some frame the Boddhisattva played the axis which are encircled with various motifs without the classical element of harmonising, nervertheless,the motif and decoration are so placed that one explores one detail to another in an interrelated fashion, without compromising at the axis prominance.

The composition generally confine to single band of ornamentation though in later years paintings overspread the entire surface of the rock canvas. Benjumin Rowland wrote “These paintings overspread the entire surface with human beings in the enactment of Indian Aesop’s fables, have the same sense of teeming life and vitality we encounter in the densely crowded relief of the famous gateways of Sanchi”.

At the level of composition, the ‘eye’ of human compassion is almost universal and motifs like human being to animal are punctuated in a manner without loosing its balance or character. Ornamentation and hemming with flower and foliage are depicted with ‘dancing rhythm’ .Vartana or shading on the leaf are uniquly copy-book of ancient aesthetic dictum.

The famous queen depiction in palace (cave I) is one of the unique example lavanya or grace one of the six elements of art mentioned in Kama Sutra. In this composition one finds the lyrical eyes looking downword with compassion. Though the painting has faded but the highlight and shades stands out prominently. Jewels and ornamentations from necklace to arm-band are prominently placed without undermining the flow and movement of the gesture. If we compare this posture with the cave XVII where Indra and his celestial nymphs are shown one can find the contrast. Though both are in their ‘grace’but colour temperature changes rapidly. Indra is given a movement with the puffing air like white and blue shades. The detail of ornaments are given a secondary treatment. But the bhava of compassion is never lost.

In the cave XVII we find a depiction of Jataka “Visvavantra”. Here the queen and her associates seen in the palace garden.T he tree with powerful stem and longish leaves are the reliefs. But the window, from where two females are peeping makes it an interesting as if those are wall hanging! The intricacies of any character is not neglected, but again the queen with her standing posture becomes an axis. This is the uniqueness, as none of the character is diluted to enchance one depiction. All are in those isolation got enough highlight without defeating the theme.

If you analyse the eyes of Ajanta fresco, its really unique. The eyes of the princess, kings and celestial gods are drawin with weavy eye-lid of meditative nature to depict the sulime look of grace and compassion. Similarly the eyes of the beggers(Cave XVII) are ‘soothing’ but has an element of pain and suffering. Then in the same cave where a Brahman receiving ‘alms’ is shown with anxious ‘eyes’with the addendums of creases and twitchings. Again in the same cave the eyes of the maid is seen with the ‘element’of action. So the essence of resemblance true to the mind and nature stood prominently in those fresco.

These are some punctuations. But delving deep into the figures, the ‘compsit’compositions and the posture swings with the character and theme of the frame which differed to create style within style, and at times set out trends of super imposition in a tier system .of characters without howerver loosing the sublime purpose of aesthetic compositions.

Dali happens to be one of my favorite artists.

Apart from being an incredibly creative & skilled painter he was also well known for his eccentricities,megalomania and peccadilloes. He was also very witty and clever.

Here is a Gem:
Dali used to proclaim repeatedly that nothing that occurs in the Universe will ever astonish him.
Not being able to stand this boasting any longer one of his friends asks him “Nothing at all astonishes you! .

All right. Let us imagine something. It is now mid night and on the horizon a vague light begins to appear, heralding the dawn.

You are looking intensely,and all of a sudden you see the sun come up. At midnight! Would that not at least astonish you?”
“No” says Dali, “That would not astonish me in the slightest.”

Pot paintings is one of the very old forms of art around the world.

it is belived that,since the begining of our civilisation the Terrocotta kind of pots has been used to preserve the seeds.The farmers used to keep the seed in a very huge pots which contains a hole on the bottom.They pour the seed from the top of the pot and draw the seed out from the bottom hole as and when they need it in a smaller quantity for cultivation.These pots are very precious for them,(because it is storing the seeds; which is going to provide food for many years to come) they just decorate these pots with some paintings on top of it.

Usually the paint they use for this pot paintings are nothing but a kind of herbal mixure with herbal oil.(oil paintings). The Neem is one of the main content of this mixture.This paintings are not just alone for decorationg these pots but also protecting the pots.The herbal paint act as a insecticide/pesticide and protect the seeds within.The paint fill the micro holes of these pot and make it free from micro insects and also protect it from various claimatical changes.So the seed can stay safe for much longer time.

The images usually the make on these pots are like sun,moon,river,cattle animals,tree's,plants,flowers,rain,mountain's,festivals,seasons etc. They are the worshipers of the nature.Latter on this has been on a custom to draw some paintings on these pots and still the same is continued even today in some of the primitative places.

Culture
Batik has been both an art and a craft for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there.

Contemporary batik, while owing much to the past, is markedly different from the more traditional and formal styles. For example, the artist may use etching, discharge dyeing, stencils, different tools for waxing and dyeing, wax recipes with different resist values and work with silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper or even wood and ceramics.

PROCEDURE
Melted wax (Javanese: malam) is applied to cloth before being dipped in dye. It is common for people to use a mixture of beeswax and paraffin wax.

The beeswax will hold to the fabric and the paraffin wax will allow cracking, which is a characteristic of batik. Wherever the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colours are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps.
Thin wax lines are made with a canting (also spelled tjanting or tjunting), a wooden handled tool with a tiny metal cup with a tiny spout, out of which the wax seeps. Other methods of applying the wax onto the fabric include pouring the liquid wax, painting the wax on with a brush, and applying the hot wax to pre-carved wooden or metal wire block (called a tjap) and stamping the fabric.

After the last dyeing, the fabric is hung up to dry. Then it is dipped in a solvent to dissolve the wax, or ironed between paper towels or newspapers to absorb the wax and reveal the deep rich colors and the fine crinkle lines that give batik its character. This traditional method of batik making is called Batik Tulis (lit: Written Batik).

The invention of the copper block or cap developed by the Javanese in the 20th century revolutionized batik production. It became possible to make high quality designs and intricate patterns much faster than one could possibly do by hand-painting. This method of using copper block to applied melted wax pattern is called Batik Cap (pronounced like "chop").

Indonesian batik used for clothing normally has an intricate pattern. Traditionally, wider curves were reserved for batik produced for nobles. The traditional cloth has natural colors (tones of indigo and brown) while contemporary pieces have more variety of color.

Javanese batik typically includes symbols. Some pieces may be mystic-influenced, but very rarely used for clothing. Some may carry illustrations of animals or other intricate things

Lascaux Cave Paintings

On the cave walls are about 100 drawings of various animals, one of them an ox like beast called an aurochs. Some of the paintings are 20 feet high, and many of them show that the articles had remarkable skill.Caves at Altamira also contain many paintings. The earliest were found in 1879, but no one accepted them as prehistoric paintings until intense studies were made of some of the more recent discoveries.

The Art – ‘Body Painting’ .

Body painting is a form of body art, and has probably been evolved around since the beginning of Indus civilization.

In almost every tribalism culture we can see the body arts. Here the human body is painted by some herbs or even by burning marks, this is also used as one of the identity marks among many tribal groups. The cannibals also have these habits of marking something on their body. I have seen in national geographic channel some parts of the African regime they used to make body art by sharp knife, the blood simply bleeds out so much, but they seems to never bother(they apply some medicinal herbs to heal the wound) .

The body paintings can be used for the 'camouflage' by the soldier's in the armed forces.it is a kind of use to protect the soldier from their enemies. Here the body is being camouflaged according to the environment they are in. So,it is simply like a kind of ' Lizard ' which changes it body colours as per the envirnment, for e.g- Tree/Leaf/Sand colours and attacks its food(insects).The tribals too use same kind of trick to escape or to attack their enemies.it is used in Corrila type of war in the thick forest area.

The body painting was performed during ceremonies or merely just for the beauty of it. Back then they used clay and other natural pigments. Body painting still survives in parts of the world, and especially ‘Mehndi’, the form of body painting that uses henna dyes, is now very popular in the western world. The henna tattoo is semi-permanent.

Since the 1960’s, body painting emerged as an actual art form. However, there is the never-ending discussion about its social acceptability because body painting practically always involves nudity.

But no art without paint of course, and you’ll be happy to know that the paint is restricted to guidelines: the body paint has to be non-toxic and non-allergenic. The paint easily washes of with water and soap.

As for the henna dyes, which Mehndi uses, there’s a difference between the synthetic black henna, and the natural brown henna. The natural henna dye is completely safe when body painting, but the synthetic black henna dye could cause allergic reactions. You should have yourself patch tested before using these at body painting.

Bawa's older brothers encouraged him to pursue art. He studied fine arts at the School of Art, New Delhi between 1958 and 1963, where his professors included Somnath Hore, Rakesh Mehra, Dhanaraj Bhagat and B.C. Sanyal.

"But I gained an identity under Abani Sen. Sen would ask me to do 50 sketches every day, only to reject most of them. As a result I inculcated the habit of working continuously. He taught me to revere the figurative at a time when the entire scene was leaning in favor of the abstract. Without that initial training I could never have been able to distort forms and create the stylization you see in my work today," recalls Bawa.

Manjit Bawa’s Early Career
Between 1964 and 1971, Bawa worked as a silkscreen printer in Britain, where he also studied art. "On my return I faced a crisis. I asked myself, 'What shall I paint?' I couldn't be just another derivative of European style of painting." Instead, he found Indian mythology and Sufi (school of Islam) poetry. "I had been brought up on stories from the Mahabharat, the Ramayan, and the Puranas (Hindu mythological and sociological texts), on the poetry of Waris Shah (a Punjabi poet) and readings from the Granth Sahib (holy book of the Sikhs)," he says.

Manjit Bawa's canvases are distinguishable in their colors - the ochre of sunflowers, the green of the paddy fields, the red of the sun, the blue of the mountain sky. He was one of the first painters to break out of the dominant grays and browns and opted for more traditionally Indian colors like pinks, reds and violet.

He had painted Ranjha, the cowherd from the tragic ballad Heer Ranjha and Lord Krishna with a flute surrounded by dogs and not cows as in mythological paintings. Indian gods Kali and Shiva, whom Bawa considers as "icons of my country", also figure prominently in his paintings.

Nature also plays inspiration here. When young, he would travel widely either on foot, by bicycle or simply, by hitchhiking. "I have been almost everywhere - Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat. I would spread a sheet of paper on the ground and draw the countryside. The colors and the simplicity of people I met fascinated me." Birds and animals make a constant appearance in his paintings, either alone or in human company. Besides nature, the flute is a recurring motif in his works. Bawa learnt to play the flute from maestro Pannalal Ghosh. He has painted Ranjha, the cowherd from the tragic love ballad Heer Ranjha, playing the flute. He has painted Krishna with a flute, surrounded by dogs and not by cows as mythological paintings depict him. Besides these, figures of Kali and Shiva dominate Bawa's canvases; "they are the icons of my country," he feels.

Manjit gained identity under Abani Sen, whom the late painter had claimed taught him "to revere the figurative at a time when the entire art scene was leaning in favor of the abstract." Vadhera, who owns the Vadhera Art Gallery in the capital and who had attended the painter's cremation said, "The most recent memory that I have of Manjit's work was in New York where Christie's auctioned his work for USD 360,000."

He is also known to many as an 'Ice cream' painter'.

Manjit Bawa

NEW DELHI: Renowned painter Manjit Bawa, who had been in coma for nearly three years after suffering a stroke, died in the Capital on Monday. He was 67.

Known for his vibrant paintings and his love for spirituality, the artist made a mark for himself with his larger-than- life paintings filled with mythology and Sufi spirituality.

Born in the small town of Dhuri in Punjab, Mr. Bawa went on to study fine arts at the School of Art, New Delhi, under eminent professors including Somnath Hore, Rakesh Mehra, Dhanaraj Bhagat and B. C. Sanyal.

He gained recognition under Abani Sen, whom, he claimed, taught him “to revere the figurative at a time when the entire art scene was leaning in favour of the abstract.”Over the years, Mr. Bawa’s paintings have attracted both Indian as well as international buyers with one of his paintings recently selling for $3.60 lakh. He was among the first painters to break out of the dominant greys and browns of the western art and opt for more Indian colours including red and violet.

The artist was cremated in Green Park in the afternoon in the presence of a large number of friends, admirers and family members.

Expressing her grief and offering condolence to the family, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said: “Manjit Bawa’s paintings and other art works would continue to inspire younger generation in this field.”

In a condolence message, the Lalit Kala Akademi said: “The creative community has lost a towering cultured figure, an important artist of our time and a great, warm-hearted and ever-helpful friend. He had evolved a distinct style of his own and had an aesthetic vision deeply rooted but open to modern interpretation. The lyricism and poetics of his picture created a long-lasting impression on viewers.”

National Gallery of Modern Art director Rajeev Lochan said Mr. Bawa had left behind a legacy that addressed the mythology with a sense of contemporary.

Stating that Mr. Bawa wanted to paint the sky red, Ena Puri, author of a biography on Mr. Bawa, said: “He loved red. He was a brave painter who had the courage to follow his convictions unmindful of the popular trend. We will remember him for his energy.”

Mr. Bawa is survived by his daughter and son. His wife died a few years ago.

The Khoisan people were the original inhabitants of much of southern Africa.

Having had a relatively lighter skin color than most black Africans, evidence shows that they lived in the area long before the Black people moving down the east and west coasts of Africa arrived in the south or European colonization.

The Khoisan people are divided into two cultures. The hunter gatherer San (commonly known as Bushmen) and the pastoral Khoi (sometimes known as Hottentots). The San was found more to the north of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana were it is drier, while the Khoi lived in the south were there is a higher rainfall and thus more grazing areas for their cattle. Today the last of the San people can be found in the Kalahari (north western South Africa and southern Namibia), while the descendants of the Khoi can be found amongst the Coloured people of South Africa.

All over South Africa there is evidence of Khoisan people living in cave openings and under overhangs. In most of these locations people have found arrow heads, pottery shards, stone tools, beads and most evidently, cave paintings.

Most of these cave paintings are done of animals and people. All kinds of animals have been identified in these paintings, but most of them are antelope like eland. In some paintings hunters can be seen hunting with spears and bow and arrows.

These picture were taken on a farm outside the town of Alicedale about an hour east of Port Elizabeth. We were taken through the bush into and up a valley before getting to the overhang. The site isn't open to the public, but there are many public cave painting sites in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and the Drakensberg.

Pablo Ruiz Picasso (October 25, 1881 – April 8, 1973), often referred to simply as Picasso, was a Spanish painter and sculptor. His full name is Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso.

One of the most recognized figures in 20th century art, he is best known as the co-founder, along with Georges Braque, of cubism.

Biography
Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain, the first child of José Ruiz y Blasco and María Picasso y López. He was christened with the names Pablo, Diego, José, Francisco de Paula, Juan Nepomuceno, Maria de los Remedios, and Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad. Picasso's father was a painter whose specialty was the naturalistic depiction of birds and who for most of his life was also a professor of art at the School of Crafts and a curator of a local museum.

The young Picasso showed a passion and a skill for drawing from an early age; according to his mother,his first word was "piz," a shortening of lápiz, the Spanish word for pencil. It was from his father that Picasso had his first formal academic art training, such as figure drawing and painting in oil. Although Picasso attended art schools throughout his childhood, often those where his father taught, he never finished his college-level course of study at the Academy of Arts (Academia de San Fernando) in Madrid, leaving after less than a year.

Personal life
After studying art in Madrid, he made his first trip to Paris in 1900, the art capital of Europe. In Paris, he lived with Max Jacob (journalist and poet), who helped him learn French. Max slept at night and Picasso slept during the day as he worked at night. There were times of severe poverty, cold, and desperation. Much of his work had to be burned to keep the small room warm. In 1901, with his friend Soler, he founded the magazine Arte Joven in Madrid. The first edition was entirely illustrated by him. From that day, he started to simply sign his work Picasso, while before he signed Pablo Ruiz y Picasso. In the early years of the 20th century, Picasso, still a struggling youth, divided his time between Barcelona and Paris, where in 1904, he began a long-term relationship with Fernande Olivier. It is she who appears in many of the Rose period paintings. After acquiring fame and some fortune, Picasso left Olivier for Marcelle Humbert, whom Picasso called Eva. Picasso included declarations of his love for Eva in many Cubist works. In Paris, Picasso entertained a distinguished coterie of friends in the Montmartre and Montparnasse quarters, including André Breton, poet Guillaume Apollinaire, and writer Gertrude Stein. Apollinaire was arrested on suspicion of stealing the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911. Apollonaire pointed to his friend Picasso, who was also brought in for questioning, but both were later exonerated.

He maintained a number of mistresses in addition to his wife or primary partner. Picasso was married twice and had four children by three women. In the summer of 1918, Picasso married Olga Khokhlova, a ballerina with Sergei Diaghilev's troupe, for whom Picasso was designing a ballet, Parade, in Rome; and they spent their honeymoon in the villa near Biarritz of the glamorous Chilean art patron Eugenia Errázuriz. Khokhlova introduced Picasso to high society, formal dinner parties, and all the social niceties attendant on the life of the rich in 1920s Paris. The two had a son, Paulo, who would grow up to be a dissolute motorcycle racer and chauffeur to his father. Khokhlova's insistence on social propriety clashed with Picasso's bohemian tendencies and the two lived in a state of constant conflict. In 1927 Picasso met 17 year old Marie-Thérèse Walter and began a secret affair with her. Picasso's marriage to Khokhlova soon ended in separation rather than divorce, as French law required an even division of property in the case of divorce, and Picasso did not want Khokhlova to have half his wealth. The two remained legally married until Khokhlova's death in 1955. Picasso carried on a long-standing affair with Marie-Thérèse Walter and fathered a daughter, Maia, with her. Marie-Thérèse lived in the vain hope that Picasso would one day marry her, and hanged herself four years after Picasso's death.

The photographer and painter Dora Maar was also a constant companion and lover of Picasso. The two were closest in the late 1930s and early 1940s and it was Maar who documented the painting of Guernica. During the Second World War, Picasso remained in Paris while the Germans occupied the city. Picasso's artistic style did not fit the Nazi views of art, so he was not able to show his works during this time. Retreating to his studio, he continued to paint all the while. Although the Germans outlawed bronze casting in Paris, Picasso continued regardless, using bronze smuggled to him by the French resistance. After the liberation of Paris in 1944, Picasso began to keep company with a young art student, Françoise Gilot. The two eventually became lovers, and had two children together, Claude and Paloma. Unique among Picasso's women, Gilot left Picasso in 1953, allegedly because of abusive treatment and infidelities. This came as a severe blow to Picasso. He went through a difficult period after Gilot's departure, coming to terms with his advancing age and his perception that, now in his 70s, he was no longer attractive, but rather grotesque to young women. A number of ink drawings from this period explore this theme of the hideous old dwarf as buffoonish counterpoint to the beautiful young girl, including several from a six-week affair with Geneviève Laporte, who in June 2005 auctioned off the drawings Picasso made of her. Picasso was not long in finding another lover, Jacqueline Roque. Roque worked at the Madoura Pottery in Vallauris on the French Riviera, where Picasso made and painted ceramics. The two remained together for the rest of Picasso's life, marrying in 1961. Their marriage was also the means of one last act of revenge against Gilot. Gilot had been seeking a legal means to legitimize her children with Picasso, Claude and Paloma. With Picasso's encouragement, she had arranged to divorce her then husband, Luc Simon, and marry Picasso to secure her children's rights. Picasso then secretly married Roque after Gilot had filed for divorce in order to exact his revenge for her leaving him. Picasso had constructed a huge gothic structure and could afford large villas in the south of France, at Notre-dame-de-vie on the outskirts of Mougins, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. By this time he was a celebrity, and there was often as much interest in his personal life as his art. In addition to his manifold artistic accomplishments, Picasso had a film career, including a cameo appearance in Jean Cocteau's Testament of Orpheus. Picasso always played himself in his film appearances.

In 1955 he helped make the film Le Mystère Picasso (The Mystery of Picasso) directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot. Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France, while he and his wife Jacqueline entertained friends for dinner. His final words were "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink any more."He was interred at Castle Vauvenargues' park, in Vauvenargues, Bouches-du-Rhône. Jacqueline Roque prevented his children Claude and Paloma from attending the funeral.

Work
Picasso's work is often categorized into periods. While the names of many of his later periods are debated, the most commonly accepted periods in his work are the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1905–1907), the African-influenced Period (1908–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919). In 1939 - 40 the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, under its director Alfred Barr, a Picasso enthusiast, held a major and highly successful retrospective of his principal works up until that time. This exhibition lionized the artist, brought into full public view in America the scope of his artistry, and resulted in a reinterpretation of his work by contemporary art historians and scholars.

Blue Period
Picasso's Blue Period (1901–1904) consists of somber paintings rendered in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. This period's starting point is uncertain; it may have begun in Spain in the spring of 1901, or in Paris in the second half of the year.Many paintings of gaunt mothers with children date from this period. In his austere use of color and sometimes doleful subject matter—prostitutes and beggars are frequent subjects—Picasso was influenced by a trip through Spain and by the suicide of his friend Carlos Casagemas. Starting in autumn of 1901 he painted several posthumous portraits of Casagemas, culminating in the gloomy allegorical painting La Vie (1903), now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The same mood pervades the well-known etching The Frugal Repast (1904), which depicts a blind man and a sighted woman, both emaciated, seated at a nearly bare table. Blindness is a recurrent theme in Picasso's works of this period, also represented in The Blindman's Meal (1903, the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and in the portrait of Celestina (1903). Other works include Portrait of Soler and Portrait of Suzanne Bloch‎.

Rose Period
The Rose Period (1904–1906)[16] is characterized by a more cheery style with orange and pink colors, and featuring many acrobats and harlequins. The harlequin, a comedic character usually depicted in checkered patterned clothing, became a personal symbol for Picasso. Picasso met Fernande Olivier, a model for sculptors and artists, in Paris in 1904, and many of these paintings are influenced by his warm relationship with her, in addition to his increased exposure to French painting. The generally upbeat and optimistic mood of paintings in this period is reminiscent of the 1899-1901 period (i.e. just prior to the Blue Period) and 1904 can be considered a transition year between the two periods.

African-influenced Period
Picasso's African-influenced Period (1907–1909) begins with the two figures on the right in his painting, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, which were inspired by African artifacts. Formal ideas developed during this period lead directly into the Cubist period that follows.

Cubism
Analytic cubism
Analytic cubism (1909–1912) is a style of painting Picasso developed along with Braque using monochrome brownish colours. Both artists took apart objects and "analyzed" them in terms of their shapes. Picasso and Braque's paintings at this time are very similar to each other.

Synthetic cubism
Synthetic cubism (1912–1919) is a further development of Cubism in which cut paper fragments—often wallpaper or portions of newspaper pages—are pasted into compositions, marking the first use of collage in fine art.

Classicism and surrealism
In the period following the upheaval of World War I Picasso produced work in a neoclassical style. This "return to order" is evident in the work of many European artists in the 1920s, including Derain, Giorgio de Chirico, and the artists of the New Objectivity movement. Picasso's paintings and drawings from this period frequently recall the work of Ingres. During the 1930s, the minotaur replaced the harlequin as a motif which he used often in his work. His use of the minotaur came partly from his contact with the surrealists, who often used it as their symbol, and appears in Picasso's Guernica.

Arguably Picasso's most famous work is his depiction of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War — Guernica. This large canvas embodies for many the inhumanity, brutality and hopelessness of war. Asked to explain its symbolism, Picasso said, "It isn't up to the painter to define the symbols. Otherwise it would be better if he wrote them out in so many words! The public who look at the picture must interpret the symbols as they understand them." Guernica hung in New York's Museum of Modern Art for many years. In 1981 Guernica was returned to Spain and exhibited at the Casón del Buen Retiro. In 1992 the painting hung in Madrid's Reina Sofía Museum when it opened.

Later works
Picasso sculpture in Chicago
Picasso was one of 250 sculptors who exhibited in the 3rd Sculpture International held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the summer of 1949. In the 1950s Picasso's style changed once again, as he took to producing reinterpretations of the art of the great masters. He made a series of works based on Velazquez's painting of Las Meninas. He also based paintings on works of art by Goya, Poussin, Manet, Courbet and Delacroix. He was commissioned to make a maquette for a huge 50 foot high public sculpture to be built in Chicago, known usually as the Chicago Picasso. He approached the project with a great deal of enthusiasm, designing a sculpture which was ambiguous and somewhat controversial. What the figure represents is not known; it could be a bird, a horse, a woman or a totally abstract shape. The sculpture, one of the most recognizable landmarks in downtown Chicago, was unveiled in 1967. Picasso refused to be paid $100,000 for it, donating it to the people of the city.

Picasso's final works were a mixture of styles, his means of expression in constant flux until the end of his life. Devoting his full energies to his work, Picasso became more daring, his works more colourful and expressive, and from 1968 through 1971 he produced a torrent of paintings and hundreds of copperplate etchings. At the time these works were dismissed by most as pornographic fantasies of an impotent old man or the slapdash works of an artist who was past his prime. One long time admirer, Douglas Cooper, called them "the incoherent scribblings of a frenetic old man". Only later, after Picasso's death, when the rest of the art world had moved on from abstract expressionism, did the critical community come to see that Picasso had already discovered neo-expressionism and was, as so often before, ahead

A newly discovered mural is one of many in twelfth of Afghanistan's famed Bamian caves that Show evidence of an oil-based binder. The binder was used to dry paint and help it adhere to rocky surfaces.

The murals—and the remains of two giant, destroyed Buddhas—include the world's oldest known oil-based paint, predating European uses of the substance by at least a hundred years, scientists announced late last month.

Researchers made the discovery while conducting a chemical analysis as part of preservation and restoration efforts at Bamian, which lies about 145 miles (240 kilometers) northwest of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

's Bamian Valley cliffs shows the former home of a giant Buddha statue. Dating to between the fifth and ninth centuries A.D., the statue was one of a pair destroyed by Taliban officials in 2001.

Researchers have found that the paint used on the Buddhas, along with murals in 12 of 50 painted Bamian caves, contained oil-based binders—the world's oldest known examples of oil paintings.

The use of the substances at such an early date is a surprise, since they require sophisticated knowledge of chemical properties, scientists say.

Europeans began using oil in their pictures by about 800 A.D., but the new research on the Central Asian pushes back the onset of oil-based painting by at least a hundred years.

Researchers hope to find even earlier examples by studying other Central Asian sites.Another mural from the Bamian cave Foladi 6 has been dated to the eighth century A.D. Its artists used an oil-based paint, scientists say, in an early example of mixing organic binding agents with pigments.
