'KOLAM '
KOLAM- MEANS IN TAMIL (ONE OF THE ANCIENT LANGUAGES OF INDIA) THE DESIGN OF THE INNER HEART/EXPRESSION.IT IS VERY AUSPICIOUS CUSTOM OF INDIA.(PARTICULARLY IN THE SOUTH INDIA)
USUALLY MANY PARTS OF INDIA IT IS A KIND OF RITUAL. THE WOMEN OF THE HOUSE HAS TO GET UP EARLY IN THE MORNING AND DO CLEANING OF THE STREET IN AROUND THE HOUSE AND SPREAD/SPILL LITTLE WATER IN THE SAND AND DRAW THIS KOLAM. IN TEMPLES ALSO THEY DO THE SAME.
AS PER THE TRADITION OF INDIA THE KOLAM-POWDER IS NOTHING BUT THE GRINDED RICE FLOUR.IT IS A KIND OF OFFERING TO THE NATURE.(PIKRUTI) THE SMALL INSECTS LIKE ANT CAN EAT THIS AFTER A WHILE.IT IS A FOOD FOR THE ANT'S,AT THE SAME TIME THE WOMEN EXCELL THEIR TALENTS IN A ART FORM THROUGH VARIOUS LINES,CURVES,ARC AND DESIGNS,PICTOGRAPHS , COLOURS AND SO ON SO FORTH.
NOT ONLY THIS,THE GETTING UP EARLY IN THE MORNING,BEFORE SUNRISE AND WATERING THE LAND CAN EXHALE RICH OZONE,IT CAN BE INHALED/CHANCE TO ENTER INTO OUR SYSTEM. OZONE IS ONE OF THE 'NECTAR' S FOR OUR LIFE ENERGY.SO ONE CAN BE FREE FROM DISEASE.
DURING THE FESTIVAL LIKE PONGAL,ONAM AND NAVRATRI,MARRIAGE ETC THE KOLAM COMPETION MAKES THE STREET VERY COLOURFUL AND BRING MORE FUN AND JOY UNTO LIFE.THIS WILL TRIGGERS THE CREATIVE TALENT AMONG THE KIDS.WHILE THEIR MOM DOING THIS,THE CHILDREN USED TO HELP/ASSIST THEIR MOM AND CATCH HOLD OF THIS ART BY AND BY THIS CUSTOM OF DRAWING KOLLAM WILL PASS UNTO THE NEXT GENERATIONS.BUT TODAY THE SO CALLED MODERN HOMES THIS ART IS MISSING AND FADING OUT FROM THE CULTURE.THAT IS SAD.BUT THE EVOLUTION HAS GOT ITS OWN TREND.
THE OTHER VARIETIES OF KOLLAM IS CALLED 'RANGOLI' .ESPECIALLY IN THE REGION OF KERALA IT IS VERY FAMOUS.
